High School Student and Essay Competition Winner

In Liberia, Leadership Africa USA and local NGO Alfalit International-Liberia with support from USAID collaborated with 40 local high schools to enhance leadership skills through an essay competition and leadership workshop. The essay competition entitled “Youth Leadership in Conflict Resolution, Peace Building and Governance” was a first step in launching Leadership Africa USA’s youth leadership project in Liberia in which student essays were independently judged and 10 winners were chosen. Mr. Paye A. Kailain submitted the winning essay. Student essay winners received a cash prize donated by the International Bank of Liberia, Ltd.

The essay competition was followed by a youth leadership workshop to work with local students on what it takes to be a good leader and the role effective leadership can play to reduce conflict through training and skills transfer to achieve sustainable peace and development.

Over 300 students attended the day long session which was attended by the local media, government officials and community leaders.

The workshop was attended by the former U.S. Ambassador to Liberia, the Director of the National Bureau of the Budget for Liberia, Government officials from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sport, the Ministry of Gender and Development, and the Federation of Liberian Youth.

Most Liberian high school students were born at a time when their country was in conflict. Leadership Africa USA’s vision is to assist Liberian students make informed decisions utilizing their leadership training and skills as to how their situations can be improved in an orderly and peaceful manner.
