It is Leadership Africa USA’s goal to
promote peace. In its newest initiative to empower Casamance Youth
Leadership Africa USA does just that.
Leadership Africa USA (LA USA) with the support of USAID’s Africa Education Initiative (AEI) and in collaboration with the University of Ziguinchor and the Ministry of Education has launched a Leadership Training Program that directly targets middle school students to be active participants in the peace & reconciliation process in Senegal’s Casamance Region. The objective for this leadership initiative is to promote leadership in the post-conflict area of the Casamance region through middle school students in order for them to become active participants in the on-going peace process. The main goal of this initiative is to develop a middle school Leadership Curriculum in collaboration with
the University of Ziguinchor with substantial input for the students
that is approved by the Ministry of Education. The success of this
program would result in the first Leadership Curriculum targeted to
middle school students.
In order to obtain support for this effort on the ground, Leadership Africa USA has identified key university participants and middle-school officials in order to obtain the input of local actors like the Ministry of Education and World Education in formulating a leadership curriculum for middle school students. Leadership Africa USA has also brought together peace stakeholders, notable academic authorities and community leaders to contribute their observations and recommendations on the peace process related to this initiative. The current leadership initiative consists of four phases: In-country assessment, an essay writing competition, a leadership curriculum workshop, and a test phase. The first phase established Leadership Africa USA’s presence in Senegal. It consisted of contacting various local partners and peace shareholders to establish the importance of the Leadership program in Ziguinchor. It also consisted of holding a successful Leadership Summit for Peace Stakeholders to launch the initiative. |
